If you’re a blogger, you may have heard that an email list is important but many people don’t understand why. Some think it’s useless if you don’t plan on making any products. I am here to tell you that that is bullshit and you NEED to start growing it. There’s no time like the present. Every day that you don’t set up a system to collect emails through your blog is a day wasted. If you are confused as to why you should be collecting them and don’t know how to do so, then this is the guide for you.
1.GROW YOUR TRAFFIC
Every single time I send out an email my traffic spikes. You must remember people may look at your blog once, sign up and then totally forget about it. There are billions of websites out there so you should remind them about yours and make them visit again! In terms of when to send them, I used to send a monthly newsletter, then I realised I have all these great articles, which most of my email subscribers might not know about and I’m just emailing them once a month?! Then I started weekly emails, just one a week and I noticed a huge increase. You may think you are spamming them but you’re not! They are the ones that were dedicated enough to give their email address to you so you must get that thought out of your head. If they really find it annoying, then they will unsubscribe but that’s totally fine. At the end of the day you only want quality and engaged readers anyway!
2. START EARNING WITH AFFILIATES
This is something I recently learned about in Michelle’s course Making sense of affiliates. I was sending this weekly email which is great on my traffic but I wasn’t sending them to profitable posts that have affiliate links. Quite recently I wrote a gift guide for travellers and I sent out an email with a link to the post but also 5 of the links to the gifts just in case they didn’t feel like reading all 11 of them. It’s a win-win. They click on the gift links and hopefully purchase then, or before, my 30-day cookie ends or I get traffic to my site.
3. PROMOTE YOUR OWN PRODUCTS
If you have thought of making products, courses or printables then emails are the perfect way to sell them! It’s not a case of just sending them an email with a link to your product. Make sure you email them multiple times before you launch to get them excited and/or give them time to save for the product.
4. YOU OWN YOUR EMAIL LIST
Isn’t it scary to think that tomorrow Facebook, Twitter or Instagram could be gone and so could all your hundreds or thousands of followers? When you collect email addresses you own the right to them. We will always have email but you cannot say the same for other social media accounts. This is one of the main reasons why you should be collecting email addresses.
5. EMAIL IS MORE PERSONAL
When you send out an email it’s more personal than just sharing it on a social media page. When people log on to Facebook or Instagram there are so many different people competing for that person like or click but with an email, you are personally sending that email and they are guaranteed to see it because why would someone sign up to your mailing list if they never check their emails? You have their undivided attention.
HOW TO GROW YOUR EMAIL LIST?
Now you know why it’s important to collect email addresses now I will tell you 5 different ways you can grow your list. There are plenty of ways but these 5 are my holy grail and have helped me collect thousands of email addresses over on my travel blog.
1.USE A POP-UP OR WELCOME MAT
This is not for everyone. Some bloggers absolutely hate popups and think they are spamming but you really should think of your readers. I wouldn’t do a popup if I have nothing good to offer them. This is also my highest converting way of collecting email addresses so obviously, my readers don’t think it’s spammy. The way I look at it is because I offer them something useful and practical that they can keep and use to help plan for their travels, then my popup is not spam.
2. ADD A SIGN-UP FORM TO YOUR SIDEBAR
If you go to Canva you can make a cute little graphics to place on your sidebar. Choose an eye-catching picture and offer them something to help it convert email addresses.
3. ADD CONTENT LOCKS TO A COUPLE OF YOUR REALLY USEFUL POSTS
If people want to see more free printables then they must put their email address in to see the rest. These content locks convert well if you place them right before the super useful content. These convert really well in list posts and any other long articles.
4. ADD SIGN UP BARS WITHIN YOUR POSTS
You may have noticed at the bottom of all my posts on my travel blog Anita Hendrieka, I have a sign-up bar where people can pop in their email address and collect their free travel bundle. These are a great way to collect them if you don’t feel comfortable using a pop-up or the other ways to collect emails. You should at least try this way! I use Thrive Leads which cost me $50. It’s a one-off payment and for me, it’s been worth it. I also use the free version of SumoMe.
5. USE PINTEREST
A lot of people are utilizing Pinterest to collect email addresses. Melyssa from Making sense of affiliates, swears by it and has been collecting thousands of emails this way. My course Pinterest in Growing teaches you how to gain more readers and views to your website so if you would like to know how to grow your email list from Pinterest then sign up for my course.
Make sure you are also promoting your email list through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Put the link in your bios/descriptions to get the most out of it!
